    IELTS Speaking part 2

    1. Đề bài

Describe an activity you like doing to keep healthy

    You should say:

    • What the activity is
    • When you do it
    • How often you do it
    • And why it is a good way to look after your health

    2. Sample answer 1

I’d like to talk about an activity I enjoy doing to stay healthy, which is swimming. I usually go swimming in the evenings after school or university, around 6 or 7 p.m., because it helps me relax after a long day of studying.

I try to go swimming about twice a week, usually on Tuesdays and Thursdays. There’s a local swimming pool near my home that’s clean and not too crowded, which makes it a perfect place for me to swim. Sometimes, I go alone to focus on my laps, and other times, I go with a couple of friends to make it more enjoyable.

Swimming is a great way to keep myself healthy for several reasons. First of all, it’s a full-body workout that helps improve my cardiovascular fitness and muscle strength without putting too much strain on my joints. This is especially important for me because I spend a lot of time sitting while studying, and swimming helps counterbalance that. Additionally, swimming has a calming effect on me. The rhythmic movements and the feeling of being in water help clear my mind and reduce my stress, making it easier for me to concentrate on my studies afterwards.

Well, swimming is an excellent activity for maintaining both my physical and mental health. It’s something I look forward to each week because it not only keeps me fit but also provides a much-needed break from my academic responsibilities. I believe that incorporating swimming into my routine has made a significant positive impact on my overall well-being.

    3. Sample answer 2

Honestly, I’m not someone who spends a lot of time on physical activities, so I don’t have a strict routine for staying healthy. However, if I had to mention one thing, I’d say walking is probably the only regular activity I do. It’s not exactly intense exercise, but I try to walk whenever I can instead of taking motorbikes or buses for short distances. For example, I often walk to nearby places, like the grocery store or to a friend’s house, especially when the weather is nice.

I don’t have a set schedule for walking, and I don’t track how many steps I take or anything like that. Usually, I end up walking about three or four times a week, mostly on weekends or in the evenings after school or work.

I think walking is a good way to at least get some light exercise without too much effort. It’s simple, doesn’t need any equipment, and gives me a little fresh air, which helps me feel a bit refreshed and relaxed. I don’t go out of my way to do it for health benefits, but I know it’s still better than doing nothing at all. So even though I’m not the most active person, I think adding a bit of walking here and there is a small way to stay at least a bit healthier.

IELTS Speaking part 3 sample answers

    1. What do most people do to keep healthy in your country?

In my country, people take various approaches to stay healthy. For starters, many individuals are turning to traditional forms of exercise, like jogging in parks or practicing tai chi. This kind of activity is not only accessible but also enjoyable, especially for older people. On top of that, younger generations are increasingly joining gyms and taking fitness classes, which have become quite popular. From the outset, I’d say people are also focusing more on their diet, trying to incorporate more vegetables and less fast food. To my way of thinking, there’s a growing awareness here about the importance of a balanced lifestyle.

    • take various approaches /teɪk ˈvɛəriəs əˈproʊtʃɪz/: thực hiện các cách tiếp cận khác nhau
    • stay healthy /steɪ ˈhɛlθi/: duy trì sức khỏe
    • traditional forms of exercise /trəˈdɪʃənl fɔːrmz ʌv ˈɛksərsaɪz/: các hình thức tập thể dục truyền thống
    • accessible /əkˈsɛsəbəl/: dễ tiếp cận
    • enjoyable /ɪnˈdʒɔɪəbəl/: thú vị, dễ chịu
    • younger generations /ˈjʌŋɡər ˌdʒɛnəˈreɪʃənz/: thế hệ trẻ
    • fitness classes /ˈfɪtnəs ˈklæsɪz/: lớp thể dục
    • balanced lifestyle /ˈbælənst ˈlaɪfˌstaɪl/: lối sống cân bằng
    • diet /ˈdaɪət/: chế độ ăn uống

    2. How important is it for people to do some regular physical exercise?

As far as I’m concerned, regular physical exercise is incredibly important for maintaining both physical and mental well-being. First of all, staying active helps to strengthen the heart and improve blood circulation, which can prevent many chronic diseases. Another thing is that exercise releases endorphins, reducing stress and boosting mood, which is essential in today’s fast-paced life. What’s more, I’d go as far as to say that even a small amount of exercise daily can make a big difference in someone’s overall health. So, the way I see it, making time for regular physical activity should be a priority for everyone.

    • regular physical exercise /ˈrɛɡjələr ˈfɪzɪkəl ˈɛksərsaɪz/: tập thể dục thường xuyên
    • mental well-being /ˈmɛntəl wɛl ˈbiɪŋ/: sức khỏe tinh thần
    • strengthen the heart /ˈstrɛŋθən ðə hɑːrt/: làm mạnh tim
    • blood circulation /blʌd ˌsɜːkjʊˈleɪʃən/: tuần hoàn máu
    • chronic diseases /ˈkrɒnɪk dɪˈziːzɪz/: bệnh mãn tính
    • endorphins /ɪnˈdɔːfɪnz/: endorphin
    • stress /strɛs/: căng thẳng
    • boosting mood /ˈbuːstɪŋ muːd/: nâng cao tâm trạng
    • fast-paced life /fæst-peɪst laɪf/: cuộc sống nhịp độ nhanh

    3. Do you think people in your country are less healthy than they used to be?

Yes, I think people in my country might be less healthy overall compared to previous generations. One reason for this, in my opinion, is that modern lifestyles are often more sedentary due to office jobs and the increasing use of technology. With that being said, we’re seeing a rise in awareness about health and wellness, which is encouraging. But on the whole, the increased consumption of processed foods and the lack of physical activity for some people make it harder to stay fit. Mind you, people are starting to recognize these issues and are slowly making changes, but it’s still a challenge.

    • modern lifestyles /ˈmɒdərn ˈlaɪfˌstaɪlz/: lối sống hiện đại
    • sedentary /ˈsɛdəntəri/: ít vận động
    • increasing use of technology /ɪnˈkriːsɪŋ juːz ʌv tɛkˈnɒlədʒi/: sử dụng công nghệ ngày càng nhiều
    • health and wellness /hɛlθ ənd ˈwɛlnəs/: sức khỏe và sự khỏe mạnh
    • processed foods /ˈprəʊsɛst fuːdz/: thực phẩm chế biến sẵn
    • lack of physical activity /læk ʌv ˈfɪzɪkəl ækˈtɪvɪti/: thiếu hoạt động thể chất
    • recognize these issues /ˈrɛkəɡnaɪz ðiːz ˈɪʃuːz/: nhận ra những vấn đề này
    • make changes /meɪk ˈʧeɪndʒɪz/: thay đổ

    4. How can we encourage young people to stay healthy?

To my way of thinking, encouraging young people to stay healthy requires a few strategies. For starters, schools could incorporate more engaging physical activities in their curriculum, like dance or team sports, to make exercise fun. Another thing we can do is to promote health awareness campaigns on social media, where young people spend a lot of their time. What’s more, parents and role models can set a good example by leading a healthy lifestyle themselves. I reckon that if we make healthy habits more appealing, young people will be more likely to adopt them.

    • encouraging young people /ɪnˈkʌrɪdʒɪŋ jʌŋ ˈpiːpl/: khuyến khích giới trẻ
    • engaging physical activities /ɪnˈɡeɪdʒɪŋ ˈfɪzɪkəl ækˈtɪvɪtiz/: các hoạt động thể chất hấp dẫn
    • health awareness campaigns /hɛlθ əˈwɛə(r)nəs ˈkæmpeɪnz/: chiến dịch nâng cao nhận thức về sức khỏe
    • social media /ˈsəʊʃəl ˈmiːdɪə/: mạng xã hội
    • set a good example /sɛt ə ɡʊd ɪɡˈzɑːmpl/: làm gương tốt
    • lead a healthy lifestyle /liːd ə ˈhɛlθi ˈlaɪfˌstaɪl/: sống một lối sống lành mạnh

    5. Should the government intervene to force people to be healthier?

This is a tough question. On one hand, I believe the government has a responsibility to promote public health, which could involve measures like taxing sugary drinks or making healthy food more affordable. That said, forcing people to be healthier can be seen as intrusive, and it’s essential to respect personal freedom. My take on this is that a better approach might be to provide incentives for healthy behavior rather than enforcing strict regulations. For example, subsidizing gym memberships or offering discounts on nutritious food could encourage people to make healthier choices voluntarily.

    • responsibility to promote public health /rɪˌspɒnsəˈbɪləti tuː prəˈmoʊt ˈpʌblɪk hɛlθ/: trách nhiệm thúc đẩy sức khỏe cộng đồng
    • taxing sugary drinks /ˈtæksɪŋ ˈʃʊɡəri drɪŋks/: đánh thuế đồ uống có đường
    • making healthy food more affordable /ˈmeɪkɪŋ ˈhɛlθi fuːd mɔːr əˈfɔːdəbl/: làm thực phẩm lành mạnh dễ tiếp cận hơn
    • intrusive /ɪnˈtruːsɪv/: xâm phạm
    • personal freedom /ˈpɜːrsənl ˈfriːdəm/: tự do cá nhân
    • incentives for healthy behavior /ɪnˈsɛntɪvz fɔːr ˈhɛlθi bɪˈheɪvjər/: khuyến khích hành vi lành mạnh
    • subsidizing gym memberships /ˈsʌbsɪˌdaɪzɪŋ dʒɪm ˈmɛmbəʃɪps/: trợ cấp thẻ hội viên phòng gym
    • offering discounts on nutritious food /ˈɒfərɪŋ dɪsˈkaʊnts ɒn nuːˈtrɪʃəs fuːd/: cung cấp giảm giá cho thực phẩm dinh dưỡng

    6. Which one is more important for a healthy life - a healthy diet or a regular exercise plan? Why?

If I had to choose, I’d say a healthy diet might be slightly more important than exercise. The way I see it, what we eat has a direct impact on our energy levels, immune system, and overall well-being. A nutritious diet provides the body with essential vitamins and minerals, which are crucial for long-term health. That said, regular exercise is also vital because it helps with weight management and mental health. But in terms of priority, I’d argue that having a balanced diet lays a foundation for good health, and then exercise can further enhance that foundation.

    • healthy diet /ˈhɛlθi ˈdaɪət/: chế độ ăn uống lành mạnh
    • energy levels /ˈɛnədʒi ˈlɛvəlz/: mức năng lượng
    • immune system /ɪˈmjuːn ˈsɪstəm/: hệ miễn dịch
    • nutritious diet /nuːˈtrɪʃəs ˈdaɪət/: chế độ ăn uống bổ dưỡng
    • weight management /weɪt ˈmænɪdʒmənt/: quản lý cân nặng
    • mental health /ˈmɛntəl hɛlθ/: sức khỏe tinh thần
    • balanced diet /ˈbælənst ˈdaɪət/: chế độ ăn cân bằng

    7. Why do more people visit doctors and hospitals today than at any time in the past?

There are several reasons for this trend. For starters, people today are more aware of health issues and the importance of early diagnosis, so they’re more likely to visit a doctor when something feels wrong. Another factor is the rise of chronic illnesses, partly due to modern lifestyles, such as diabetes or high blood pressure, which require frequent check-ups. What’s more, healthcare technology has advanced, allowing for more specialized treatments and tests that might not have been available in the past. The way I see it, while increased hospital visits may seem worrying, they’re also a sign that people are taking their health more seriously.

    • health issues /hɛlθ ˈɪʃuːz/: vấn đề sức khỏe
    • early diagnosis /ˈɜːrli daɪəgˈnəʊsɪs/: chẩn đoán sớm
    • chronic illnesses /ˈkrɒnɪk ˈɪlnəsɪz/: bệnh mãn tính
    • healthcare technology /ˈhɛlθkeər tɛkˈnɒlədʒi/: công nghệ chăm sóc sức khỏe
    • specialized treatments /ˈspɛʃəlaɪzd ˈtriːtmənts/: các phương pháp điều trị chuyên biệt
    • taking their health more seriously /ˈteɪkɪŋ ðɛr hɛlθ mɔːr ˈsɪərɪəsli/: chú trọng sức khỏe hơn
