The graph below shows the average number of trips per person on public transport in four Australian cities between 1900 and 2010.
The graph illustrates how many journeys an average person took by using public means of transportation between 1900 and 2010 in Sydney, Adelaide, Hobart and Canberra, which are all Australian cities.
Overall, it is clear that Sydney commuters were more likely to use mass transit compared to those in other cities in any given year. Additionally, there was a spike in the average number of trips per capita in 1950 in all four cities, after which they uniformly experienced a downward trend.
Between 1900 and 1920, people from Canberra did not use public vehicles, while those from Sydney significantly increased their usage from less than 250 to roughly 470 trips before dropping to 325 in 1930. By 1950, the figures for both increased to their respective peaks, at precisely 450 for Sydney and 200 for Canberra. Towards the end, the average number of journeys taken by Sydney citizens decreased dramatically to less than 150, whereas that of Canberra slightly fluctuated before ending at roughly 80, securing it the second place.
Turning to the data for Hobart and Adelie, while the former rose from 150 to 300 between 1900 and 1950, the latter followed a more dramatic upward trajectory, from approximately 75 to more than 400. Similarly to Sydney, they both plummeted substantially the next 60 years, albeit at different paces, to roughly 50 trips per person by 2010. It’s important to note that the figure for Adelaide was still slightly higher than that of Hobart in the final years of the research, even if the gap was minuscule.
