Nowadays, there are several people who believe that what normal people can do is far too inconsequential compared to the enormity of the environmental crisis, while the opponents of this sentiment refuse the pessimism of the statement, arguing instead that we can make considerable differences as individuals. While both arguments are valid in their own way, I am more inclined to believe in the latter.
On the one hand, there are several reasons why individual actions do not seem to matter much. Firstly, the magnitude of the crisis we are dealing with, according to many climate change experts, is frankly quite horrifying. This is evidenced by the fact that collaborative efforts between government and corporations from all over the world has not been able to prevent the majority of natural catastrophes. Therefore, it might seem laughable to even suggest that an ordinary citizen can have the power to do anything effective. Secondly, it is undeniable that the primary actors that contribute to the acceleration and exacerbation of climate change are companies, factories and other for-profit private institutions around the world, not the average person. Adopting a greener lifestyle on the individual scale hardly matters when corporations, companies and factories continuously pump billions tons of pollutants into the environment with little to no push back from the government.
On the other hand, succumbing to pessimism also obscures the people's potential to combat climate change. Although separated individuals can be powerless to effect any meaningful changes, collaborating with other people to fight for a common environmental cause has been proven throughout modern history to be very effective. There have been many protests organized from the ground up from normal people that successfully push for positive changes for the environment. For example, in several Central regions in Vietnam, many factories were known to dump vast quantities of toxic waste into local bodies of water, leading to dire consequences on not only the environment but also people’s health. However, as the farmers and the workers began to organize mass protests and strikes in various localities, the corporations responsible for the factories had to cave in to their demand and made radical changes in their waste treatment policy. In short, the power of individuals lies not within themselves, but in their cooperation with their fellow human beings.
To conclude, while lone actions can not tackle environmental degradation in any meaningful way, serious changes are possible through collective activism. Therefore, it would be unwise to dismiss individual agencies entirely.
