One prize I received that I’m particularly proud of is a scholarship I won during my final year of high school. The scholarship was awarded to students who had excelled in both academics and extracurricular activities.

I received the scholarship last year, just before graduation. It was a significant achievement for me because it not only recognized my hard work but also provided financial support for my university studies. The scholarship was presented to me at a ceremony organized by my school, and it included a certificate and a monetary award.

To earn this scholarship, I had to maintain high grades throughout my school years and actively participate in various school activities. I was involved in the debate club, volunteered for community service projects, and helped organize school events. The scholarship committee reviewed my academic performance, my contributions to the school, and my personal statement detailing my future goals.

Receiving the scholarship was a moment of great pride and relief for me. I felt that all my hard work and dedication had paid off. It was also a boost to my confidence as I prepared for the next chapter of my education. I was grateful for the recognition and the financial support, which made my transition to university life smoother. Overall, it was a rewarding experience that motivated me to continue striving for excellence in my future endeavors.

Although I haven’t received any major prizes or awards, I did receive a few certificates of achievement during my school years. One particular certificate that stands out is the one I got for my performance in the school science fair.

I received this certificate in my sophomore year of high school. It was awarded to students who excelled in their science projects. The certificate was presented to me during a school assembly, and it was a nice recognition for my efforts.

To earn this certificate, I worked on a science project about renewable energy sources. I spent several weeks researching and creating a model that demonstrated how solar panels work. I also presented my project to the judges and explained its potential benefits for reducing energy consumption. Although my project didn’t win any top prizes, receiving the certificate was still a great feeling.

I felt quite proud when I received the certificate. Even though it wasn’t a major award, it was a symbol of my hard work and dedication. It also gave me a sense of accomplishment and encouraged me to keep working hard in my studies. Overall, it was a positive experience and a reminder that even small recognitions can be meaningful.

    IELTS Speaking Part 3

    1. Do you think competition is all about the prize?

Not necessarily. While the prize can be a great motivation, I think competition is more about the process and the learning experience. It’s an opportunity to challenge yourself and improve your skills. For example, in academic competitions, the knowledge you gain or the personal growth from facing challenges is often more valuable than the actual prize. That being said, I won’t deny that the prize adds excitement and can push people to try harder, but it’s not the only factor. Personally, I’ve found that even when I didn’t win a prize, I still benefited from the experience.

    • process and the learning experience /ˈprəʊsɛs ənd ðə ˈlɜːrnɪŋ ɪkˈspɪərɪəns/: quy trình và kinh nghiệm học tập
    • challenge yourself /ˈʧælɪndʒ jʊərˈsɛlf/: thử thách bản thân
    • personal growth /ˈpɜːrsənl ɡroʊθ/: sự phát triển cá nhân
    • facing challenges /ˈfeɪsɪŋ ˈʧælɪndʒɪz/: đối mặt với những thử thách
    • benefited from the experience /ˈbɛnɪfɪtɪd frəm ði ɪkˈspɪərɪəns/: hưởng lợi từ kinh nghiệm

    2. What prizes should schools set for students?

I believe schools should focus on setting prizes that are meaningful and encourage further learning. For instance, scholarships or educational resources like books and courses could be great rewards because they support students' academic progress. It’s also important to offer a variety of prizes, not just for academic achievements, but for other skills like creativity or teamwork, so that more students can feel motivated. Personally, I think recognition in front of peers, like certificates or even just public acknowledgment, can also be very rewarding for students.

    • educational resources /ˌɛdʒʊˈkeɪʃənl rɪˈsɔːrsɪz/: tài nguyên giáo dục
    • creativity or teamwork /ˌkriːeɪˈtɪvɪti ɔːr ˈtiːmwɜːrk/: sự sáng tạo hoặc làm việc nhóm
    • recognition in front of peers /ˌrɛkəɡˈnɪʃən ɪn frʌnt əv pɪəz/: sự công nhận trước bạn bè
    • certificates or public acknowledgment /sərˈtɪfɪkɪts ɔːr ˈpʌblɪk əkˈnɒlədʒmənt/: chứng chỉ hoặc sự công nhận công khai

    3. What criteria should be set for students to win a particular prize?

I think the criteria should be clear, fair, and aligned with the goals of the competition. For academic prizes, it could be based on performance, like achieving a high score or showing significant improvement. For other competitions, the criteria might focus on creativity, problem-solving, or leadership. It’s also important to reward effort, not just results, because sometimes the most valuable lessons come from trying hard, even if the outcome isn’t perfect. Personally, I appreciate when competitions take effort and progress into account rather than just rewarding the best final result.

    • aligned with the goals /əˈlaɪnd wɪð ðə ɡoʊlz/: phù hợp với mục tiêu
    • performance /pərˈfɔːrməns/: thành tích
    • creativity, problem-solving, or leadership /kriːeɪˈtɪvɪti, ˈprɒbləmˌsɒlvɪŋ, ɔːr ˈliːdərʃɪp/: sự sáng tạo, giải quyết vấn đề, hoặc khả năng lãnh đạo
    • reward effort, not just results /rɪˈwɔːrd ˈɛfərt, nɒt dʒʌst rɪˈzʌlts/: khen thưởng nỗ lực, không chỉ kết quả

    4. Why do many companies offer prizes to their customers?

In my opinion, companies offer prizes as a way to attract more customers and build loyalty. It’s a form of marketing, really. By offering prizes, they create excitement and encourage people to buy their products or participate in promotions. It’s also a way for companies to stand out from their competitors. I think people are naturally drawn to the idea of getting something for free or winning something, so prizes can be a great incentive. From my own experience, I’ve definitely been more interested in certain brands because of the chance to win something.

    • attract more customers /əˈtrækt mɔːr ˈkʌstəməz/: thu hút nhiều khách hàng hơn
    • build loyalty /bɪld ˈlɔɪəlti/: xây dựng lòng trung thành
    • form of marketing /fɔːrm əv ˈmɑːrkɪtɪŋ/: hình thức tiếp thị
    • create excitement /kriːˈeɪt ɪkˈsaɪtmənt/: tạo ra sự hào hứng
    • stand out from their competitors /stænd aʊt frəm ðɛər kəmˈpɛtɪtərz/: nổi bật so với đối thủ
    • incentive /ɪnˈsɛntɪv/: động lực

    5. Why should we set prizes for competitions?

I think prizes serve as a strong motivation for participants. They give people something tangible to aim for, which can make the competition more engaging. Besides that, prizes also recognize and reward hard work, which can boost the confidence of the winners and encourage others to improve. It adds a sense of accomplishment to the whole experience. However, I also believe that the value of a competition isn’t just about the prize, but the skills and knowledge participants gain along the way. For me, even without winning, the sense of personal growth is rewarding.

    • tangible /ˈtændʒəbl/: hữu hình
    • engaging /ɪnˈɡeɪdʒɪŋ/: thu hút
    • recognize and reward hard work /ˈrɛkəɡnaɪz ənd rɪˈwɔːrd hɑːrd wɜːrk/: công nhận và khen thưởng công sức
    • boost confidence /buːst ˈkɒnfɪdəns/: tăng cường sự tự tin
    • sense of accomplishment /sɛns əv əˈkɒmplɪʃmənt/: cảm giác thành tựu

    6. Why do some companies encourage employees to compete with each other?

I think companies encourage competition among employees to increase productivity and innovation. When employees compete, they’re often more driven to perform at their best, which can benefit the company overall. However, I believe it’s important for companies to promote healthy competition. If it becomes too aggressive, it could create a negative work environment. Personally, I feel that competition can be motivating if it’s balanced with teamwork and collaboration. When handled correctly, it pushes people to develop their skills and take initiative, which is good for both employees and the company.

    • increase productivity /ɪnˈkriːs prɒdʌkˈtɪvɪti/: tăng năng suất
    • innovation /ˌɪnəˈveɪʃən/: đổi mới sáng tạo
    • drive to perform /draɪv tə pərˈfɔːrm/: động lực để thể hiện
    • promote healthy competition /prəˈmoʊt ˈhɛlθi ˌkəmˈpɛtɪʃən/: thúc đẩy cạnh tranh lành mạnh
    • negative work environment /ˈnɛɡətɪv wɜːrk ɪnˈvaɪrənmənt/: môi trường làm việc tiêu cực
    • balanced with teamwork and collaboration /ˈbælənst wɪð ˈtiːmwɜːrk ənd kəˌlæbəˈreɪʃən/: cân bằng với làm việc nhóm và hợp tác
