Subject - Verb agreement (sự hòa hợp giữa chủ ngữ và động từ) là một quy tắc ngữ pháp vô cùng cơ bản. Cùng SOL tìm hiểu trong bài viết này nhé.
Subject Verb Agreement hay còn được gọi là sự hòa hợp giữa chủ ngữ và động từ trong tiếng Anh. Đây là một phạm trù ngữ pháp nâng cao, tập trung vào những trường hợp đặc biệt khi Subject số ít, Verb lại chia số nhiều và ngược lại. Tuy đây là trường hợp đặc biệt nhưng rất thông dụng cho bài thi IELTS Speaking/ Writing. Vì vậy, các bạn hãy theo dõi thật kĩ bài viết dưới đây để thành thạo kiến thức ngữ pháp tiếng Anh này nhé.
1. Sự hòa hợp giữa chủ ngữ và động từ là gì?
Sự hoà hợp giữa chủ ngữ và động từ là việc phân tích chủ ngữ (danh từ/ cụm danh từ) sẽ được kết hợp với động từ chia như thế nào cho phù hợp. Bởi lẽ, không phải lúc nào chúng ta cũng chỉ có những chủ ngữ như He, She, It, You, We, They,… mà còn rất nhiều trường hợp phức tạp hơn.
Quy tắc chung: Chủ ngữ là danh từ số ít hoặc danh từ không đếm được đi cùng động từ số ít và chủ ngữ số nhiều đi cùng động từ số nhiều.
Tuy nhiên, đôi khi chủ ngữ còn hoà hợp với động từ tuỳ theo ý tưởng diễn đạt hoặc danh từ/đại từ đứng trước theo các quy tắc nhất định. Sau đây là một số quy tắc cơ bản về sự hoà hợp giữa chủ ngữ và động từ.
2. Các quy tắc về sự hòa hợp giữa chủ ngữ và động từ
2.1. Các trường hợp chia động từ số ít
Trường hợp | Ví dụ |
Chủ ngữ là danh từ không đếm được hoặc danh từ đếm được SỐ ÍT Ví dụ: furniture, information, progress,… | The traffic is always busy at this time of day. |
Chủ ngữ là danh từ kết thúc bằng “s” nhưng tính ở dạng số ít: - Danh từ tên các môn học, môn thể thao: Physics (vật lý), Mathematics (toán), Economics (kinh tế học), Linguistics (ngôn ngữ học), Athletics (điền kinh), Tennis (quần vợt)...
- Danh từ tên các căn bệnh: Measles (sởi), diabetes (tiểu đường), rabies (bệnh dại),…
- Danh từ là tên quốc gia: The United States, the Philippines,...

Chủ ngữ là cụm danh từ định lượng: kích thước, cân nặng, chiều cao, 1 khoảng thời gian, khoảng cách, số tiền... | Ten years is a decade. |

Khi những chủ ngữ đều ở số ít được nối kết với nhau bằng : along with, with, as well as, together with, along with, no less than… | Hoa, as well as her sister, is studying in Hanoi. |
2.2. Các trường hợp động từ chia ở dạng số nhiều (động từ nguyên thể)

Hai hay nhiều chủ ngữ được nối kết với nhau bằng “and”- chỉ 2 người, 2 vật khác nhau Lưu ý: Khi chủ ngữ là 2 danh từ nối với nhau bởi từ “and” với ý nghĩa là cùng chỉ 1 người, 1 bộ hoặc 1 món ăn thì động từ chia số ít (thêm s/es). Ví dụ: Fish and chip is my favorite dish. | My friend and I are students |
Chủ ngữ là 1 đại từ: - Several, both, many, few/ a few, all, some + N số nhiều

Chủ ngữ là danh từ được thành lập bởi công thức The + Adjective => Dùng để chỉ nhóm người có chung 1 đặc điểm hay phẩm chất, ví dụ : The poor, the rich, the blind,…. | The poor living here need help. |
Chủ ngữ bắt đầu bằng A number of = “Một số những …”, đi với danh từ số nhiều, động từ chia ở số nhiều. | A number of students are going to the zoo |
Chủ ngữ là dân tộc. Lưu ý: Dân tộc có “the” còn ngôn ngữ thì không có “the” | The Vietnamese are hard-working. |
2.3. Các trường hợp đặc biệt
Khi chủ ngữ là các danh từ được nối với nhau bởi : as well as, with, together with, along with, accompanied by…
S1 + as well as/ with/ together with +S2 ⇒ Động từ chia theo S1
Ex: She as well as I is going to university this year.
Khi chủ ngữ là 2 danh từ nối với nhau bằng: either… or; neither… nor, or, not only… but also….
Either S1 or S2 + Verb ⇒ Động từ chia theo S2
Ex: Not only she but also they are going home
Khi chủ ngữ là hai danh từ được nối nhau bởi “of”
- Hai danh từ nếu được nối với nhau bởi “of” thì động từ chia theo danh từ phía trước:
N1 + of + N2 => Chia động từ theo N1
Ex: The study of life and living things is called biology.

Chủ ngữ là danh từ chỉ một tập hợp như : family, staff, team, group, congress, crowd, committee ….
- Nếu tính chất của tập thể đó như là một đơn vị, ta chia động từ ở hình thức số ít.
Ví dụ: The staff of this hotel is very professional.
- Nếu câu nói đang diễn tả hành động của từng thành viên (tập thể), ta chia động từ ở hình thức số nhiều.
Ví dụ: The family are having dinner.
Chủ ngữ bắt đầu bằng There => chia động từ chia theo danh từ ngay sau.
Ex: There is a book (chia theo a book)
Ex: There are two books (chia theo books)
Lưu ý: There is a book and two pens (vẫn chia theo a book)
Chủ ngữ bắt đầu bằng mệnh đề quan hệ, ta chia động từ theo danh từ trong mệnh đề chính.
Ex: One of the girls who goes out is very good.
Nếu sau “no” là danh từ số ít thì động từ chia số ít. Nếu sau “no” là danh từ số nhiều thì động từ chia số nhiều.
Ex:
No money has been invested for this company for 2 months.
No lessons were given to us by our teacher this morning.
None of us like to drink this.
